Small Business Majority testifies before the Virginia House Subcommittee on Health Professions in support of SB826

On February 13, Small Business Majority Public Director Awesta Sarkash submitted written testimony to the Virginia House Subcomittee on Health Professions on SB 826. This legislation would provide much-needed clarity and fairness in Virginia’s occupational licensing laws by ensuring that entrepreneurs with prior convictions are not unfairly denied a license to work in their chosen profession.

As a result of being excluded from the labor force, individuals impacted by the justice system are 50% more likely to start their own business and create their own job, highlighting the entrepreneurial nature of those seeking to move past their criminal record.

On February 22, Small Business Majority's Georgia Director Rachel Shanklin submitted a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of of SB 157, legislation that will give Georgians a fair chance and help expand our state’s skilled workforce by making it easier for entrepreneurs and jobseekers to obtain occupational licenses.

Benevolence Farm’s social enterprise makes a difference for North Carolina women

Benevolence Farm, located in Graham, N.C., is a transitional living and employment program for women leaving North Carolina prisons. The farm grows and sells produce, flowers and herbs and manufactures soaps, lotions and candles with the support of the women participating in its programs.

According to their mission statement, “Benevolence Farm seeks to cultivate leadership, promote sustainable livelihoods, and reap structural change with individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in North Carolina.”

Today, Small Business Majority submitted a letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions urging for members to swiftly confirm Julie Su as President Biden's nominee for Deputy Secretary of Labor. Ms. Su is the current Secretary for the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency and has a distinguished career. Small Business Majority has worked closely with Secretary Su to support workforce issues in California, including the Future of Work Commission and the Employer Training Panel, which she oversaw.

Energy runs high as So-Cal business owner sparks life into her community

Not long after accepting a voluntary early retirement package from her long time employer, Southern California Edison, Pat Watts found herself yearning to be back at work. So, she turned to entrepreneurship by taking some of the money from her retirement package and starting her own business. Little did she know, her business would end up expanding across the nation and her workforce training program would focus-in on her own community.
