The impact of reproductive health on small businesses

Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, reproductive healthcare access has changed dramatically across the country. These changes aren’t just affecting individuals—they’re also impacting small businesses. To develop a deeper understanding of how access to reproductive health services impacts entrepreneurs, Small Business Majority held three focus group discussions in January 2025 with 16 diverse small business owners from across nine states. 

Has your business been impacted by recent federal policy changes?

Recent (and proposed) actions taken by the administration, including federal funding freezes, the termination of many federal contracts and the downsizing of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) may have impacts on small businesses. In order to understand how and if these changes are affecting small businesses, we are collecting stories and feedback. If your business has encountered an economic setback due to these actions or if you are feeling optimistic about these policies, we want to hear from you.

Looking at the 100 largest metro areas in the United States, ICIC and Small Business Majority developed an interactive map tool that visualizes small business outcomes at the census tract level. Combining numerous public and private data sources, the tool offers users a unique perspective on how revenue and employment size may vary by the racial and economic characteristics of the owner and the neighborhood where the business is located.

Meet the New York City entrepreneur supporting small businesses in her community

Having spent most of her adulthood working in retail, New York City-based entrepreneur Caroline Weaver noticed that while many people understood the importance of shopping locally, few incorporated the habit into their daily lives. Wanting to change this, Caroline trekked over 2,000 miles through the five boroughs, visiting every small business she could find.

Small Business Majority submits written testimony in support of occupational licensing reform

On March 24, Small Business Majority Georgia Director Rachel Shanklin submitted written testimony to the Georgia House Rules Committee on SB 207, legislation which would improve the process for obtaining an occupational license in Georgia so that more returning citizens can rejoin the workforce and pursue careers in licensed industries.

Small Business Majority and business organizations send letter in opposition to dismantling of CDFI Fund and MBDA

On March 20, Small Business Majority and 19 state and national business organizations sent a letter to President Trump and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russell Vought in strong opposition to the March 14 executive order, Continuing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, which attempts to dismantle several agencies including the Community Development Financial Institution (Fund) and the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA).

Small Business Majority Sends Letter to Governor Youngkin on Licensing Reform

Today, Public Policy Director Awesta Sarkash sent a letter to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin urging him to sign SB 826, Predetermination for licensing eligibility; prior convictions. The bill would provide much-needed clarity and fairness in Virginia’s occupational licensing laws by ensuring that entrepreneurs with prior convictions are not unfairly denied a license to work in their chosen profession.

Small Business Majority testifies before the Virginia House Subcommittee on Health Professions in support of SB826

On February 13, Small Business Majority Public Director Awesta Sarkash submitted written testimony to the Virginia House Subcomittee on Health Professions on SB 826. This legislation would provide much-needed clarity and fairness in Virginia’s occupational licensing laws by ensuring that entrepreneurs with prior convictions are not unfairly denied a license to work in their chosen profession.

Small Business Majority sends letter to the North Carolina House Committee on Judiciary on HB 45

On February 10, Public Policy Director Awesta Sarkash sent a letter to the North Carolina House Committee on the Judiciary in support of HB 45. This legsilation would give North Carolinians a fair chance and help expand the state’s skilled workforce by making it easier for entrepreneurs and jobseekers to obtain occupational licenses.
