Small Business Owners Believe National Standards Supporting Energy Innovation Will Increase Prosperity for Small Firms

Introduction 

America’s small business owners are doing all they can to outlast the condition of today’s economy. These hardworking employers know they need the right kind of help if they are to thrive. That’s why they believe immediate action is necessary to form bold clean energy policies that will prompt innovation, and in effect, stimulate small business and the economy.

Main Findings

87% of small business owners believe that improving innovation and energy efficiency are good ways to increase prosperity for small businesses. Specifically, 76% support the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation of carbon emissions and 80% support requiring the auto industry to increase fuel efficiency standards to 60 miles per gallon.

Nearly half (46%) of employers surveyed cite their biggest concern to be economic uncertainty, while 43% feel most burdened by the rising costs of doing business. In contrast, only 13% of respondents believe regulation is their biggest problem and only 23% say taxes are their main concern.

80% of small business owners surveyed in California, 81% in Michigan and 86% in Ohio agree that it is important for the United States to take action now to increase fuel efficiency in cars and light trucks.

75% of small business owners in California, 73% in Michigan and 76% in Ohio support requiring the auto industry to reduce carbon emissions that cause climate change from cars, pickup trucks, minivans and SUVs.
