Statement by John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority, on what the nomination of Jovita Carranza could mean for small businesses

We are glad to see President Trump moved quickly to nominate a new head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) following the resignation of Linda McMahon, and we are optimistic about his choice of Jovita Carranza. We are pleased the president chose someone with high-level experience at the SBA, and we are particularly glad he chose a woman of color whom we hope will connect with a rapidly growing segment of entrepreneurs. After all, between 2007 and 2018, the number of women-owned businesses increased by 58 percent in the United States, and women are now the majority owners of 40 percent of the country’s businesses. What’s more, of the 5.8 million small firms owned by women of color as of 2018, 2.1 million are Latina-owned.

The Small Business Administration plays a vital role in America’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, notably by providing critical sources of funding, training and technical assistance for small businesses. If confirmed, we hope Ms. Carranza continues the SBA tradition of providing robust, high-quality services to America’s entrepreneurs.
