Today, Government Affairs Director, Awesta Sarkash, submitted a letter to the DC Council's Committee on Health and Business & Economic Development opposing B24-0305, the Professional Employer Oganization Registration Act of 2021. This bill would require professional employer organizations that offer health insurance in the District to register with the Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking. This bill would have negative impacts on the marketplace—and consequently on small businesses that already struggle with healthcare costs.

(BMA) and the Chair of the Board of Directors and a member of the Small Business Council for Small Business Majority testified on November 7, 2018 before the District of Columbia City Council on measures being considered to improve healthcare marketplaces in D.C.

Erik Rettig, Mid-Atlantic Director for Small Business Majority, testified on October 10, 2017 in support of implementation of Washington, D.C.'s paid family leave legislation. The law establishes a paid leave system that provides up to eight weeks of paid family and medical leave to allow employees to care for a newborn baby, six to provide care for a family member or two to recuperate themselves from a serious illness. The testimony explained how implementing this law will benefit, not burden, small businesses.
