“The California Supreme Court’s decision to bar the deceptive ‘Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act’ from appearing on the November ballot is a relief for small business owners. If this measure had been put on the ballot and passed, it would have applied retroactively to Jan. 1, 2022 meaning that more than 250 state and local funding measures would be nullified. This would include the reversal of changes to make California’s Paid Family Leave (PFL) and State Disability Insurance programs more equitable.

Statement by Bianca Blomquist, California Director for Small Business Majority, in response to the final budget agreement passed by the state legislature on June 15
“Governor Gavin Newsom has an opportunity this budget cycle to support Main Street by investing in programs that will boost entrepreneurship and quality jobs. While we were disappointed that the May budget revision failed to invest in key programs for small businesses, the state legislature righted these wrongs in the final budget that was passed last week by investing in the following provisions:
Statement from Rachel Shanklin, National Women’s Entrepreneurship Director for Small Business Majority, on the significance of abortion access for small businesses
“Small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs are relieved that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s decades-old approval of mifepristone, a drug that is used for abortion services. This is an issue of great concern to women small business owners because of the connection between access to abortion care and the ability to start a small business.
Statement from John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority, on the recent ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas to halt a federal disaster-aid program intended to support farms owned by people of color and women
“Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s decision to suspend a program intended to provide disaster relief for small farms owned by people of color is the latest example of extremist efforts to dismantle support systems meant to help BIPOC entrepreneurs.
Statement from John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority, on the damage that would be done to small businesses if the SBA is not fully funded
“The U.S. House Committee on Appropriations' proposal to fund the Small Business Administration (SBA) at significantly less in FY25 than in FY24 is irresponsible, and sends the message that our government isn’t prepared to fully support the entrepreneurs and the businesses that make up 99.9% of our nation’s employers.
Statement from John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority, on why a federal appeals court was wrong to dictate how a small business support organization can spend its funds
"To say that we are disappointed with today’s decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in the case of American Alliance for Equal Rights v Fearless Fund Foundation, LLC is insufficient to capture the outrage, despair and fear that many small businesses are feeling.
Statement from Tasha Brown, Illinois Director for Small Business Majority, on the Illinois House Committee on Financial Institutions & Licensing’s decision not to advance legislation that would help protect small businesses
“For the second consecutive year, Illinois lawmakers have let small businesses down by refusing to adopt common-sense legislation that would drastically reduce the prevalence and pain of predatory loans. Instead of looking out for entrepreneurs who are not protected by the federal Truth in Lending Act, some lawmakers decided it was more important to prioritize financial institutions that refuse to disclose full terms and pricing to small business borrowers.
Statement from John Arensmeyer, Small Business Majority Founder & CEO, on the significance of federal cannabis rescheduling for small businesses
“We’re encouraged by the Biden-Harris Administration’s decision to reschedule cannabis because we expect it will lower barriers to small business ownership in the United States, particularly for people of color. Research has found that a robust 19% of entrepreneurs who started and/or own a cannabis business are racial minorities.
Initial reaction to Gov. Newsom's May budget revision by Bianca Blomquist, California Director fo Small Business Majority
“Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 2024-25 May budget revision leaves opportunities on the table to invest in entrepreneurship and quality jobs. Despite some serious shortcomings in the governor’s proposal, however, the May revise supports long-term recovery efforts for California’s smaller firms, including:
Statement from Small Business Majority Founder & CEO John Arensmeyer on why the Federal Communications Commission’s decision to restore net neutrality protection in the United States is a win for entrepreneurs
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) looked out for the best interests of small businesses when it voted today to restore net neutrality. Without protections in place to keep the internet fair and open, small businesses are at risk of being put at a disadvantage when trying to compete with larger corporations that have the resources to ensure their websites receive special prioritization from their internet service providers.
