Event open to all small businesses; chance for entrepreneurs to learn about the small business and individual healthcare marketplaces, the state's new retirement savings act, and receive guidance on common tax filing issues facing the self-employed

CHICAGO—The West Ridge Chamber of Commerce, the South Asian Chamber of Commerce, and the Rogers Park Business Alliance, in conjunction with small business organization Small Business Majority, will host an interactive event today, September 10, from 11:30 am — 1:30 pm (CDT), on the healthcare law's impact on Illinois small businesses and how entrepreneurs can enroll in the state's health insurance marketplaces. The event will also discuss the state's new retirement savings program—the Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program Act—and provide an overview of common tax filing issues facing the self-employed today.

"We believe it's important for small business owners to learn more about the laws that affect them most, including the healthcare law and Illinois' new retirement savings act," said Susan Patel, President of the South Asian Chamber of Commerce. "These interactive dialogues are a great way for small businesses to get the information they need to take advantage of and comply with these laws, and for us to get feedback on their thoughts and concerns."

The free event, which is open to all small business owners, independent contractors and the self-employed, will feature Small Business Majority's Midwest Outreach Manager, Geraldine Aglipay, who will discuss the healthcare law's small business tax credits, wellness grants and cost containment provisions, as well as the state's new retirement savings plan. Aglipay, a licensed navigator, will also explain how the healthcare marketplace functions for self-employed business owners.

The program will also feature Eric Sternberg, staff attorney from the Center for Economic Progress, who will discuss common tax issues facing self-employed individuals, and provide small business owners insight on filing taxes.

A question and answer period will follow the discussion.

"Small business owners are our biggest job creators," said Aglipay. "Helping them understand the complexities of things like the healthcare law, the state's new retirement savings plan and their tax filing needs gives these entrepreneurs the tools they need to succeed and keep our economy strong."

The event will take place today, September 10, 2015. Registration begins at 11:30am (CDT). The event runs from 12:00pm to 1:30 pm (CDT) and will be held at the Chicago Public Library Rogers Park Branch at 6907 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60626. Small business owners can pre-register for the event online at: http://sep15healthtax.eventbrite.com.
