EPA's Final Carbon Emission Rules Will Unleash New Opportunities for Small Businesses
Statement by John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority, on the Environmental Protection Agency's release of final national carbon emission standards in the Federal Register, which can increase energy efficiency and reduce energy expenses for small businesses
The Environmental Protection Agency recently published final rules in the Federal Register for its first-ever carbon emission standards under the Clean Power Plan, which will reduce carbon pollution, lower energy costs and create new market opportunities for small businesses.
Rules such as these are strongly supported by small businesses—our primary job creators. Small Business Majority's opinion polling found the majority of small businesses support the EPA setting standards for existing power plants to curb carbon emissions. In addition, the vast majority believe investing in clean energy can stimulate the economy and create jobs now.
What's more, as part of Small Business Majority's national sign-on campaign, more than 100 small business owners from across the country signed onto a letter urging lawmakers to support the Clean Power Plan because they believe clean energy policies like these can spur innovation and create jobs.
Unfortunately some lawmakers are pushing back against EPA's carbon emission rules, which is disappointing to entrepreneurs and states that have been preparing to meet these standards. Each state is able to develop its own plan to meet guidelines in the Clean Power Plan, which gives every state the flexibility to craft a blueprint that best fits the needs of its residents and businesses. By meeting these standards, states will improve efficiency of existing power plants, use more renewable energy sources and increase energy efficiency measures.
Clean energy policies, like the Clean Power Plan, will encourage innovation, unleashing new economic opportunities for small businesses and providing cost savings. We're glad the EPA has moved forward with finalizing carbon emission standards under the Clean Power Plan and hope lawmakers stop efforts now to block implementation of these rules.
