More than 400 small business owners and business organizations signed on to our letter urging the Federal Trade Commission to enact its proposed rule to ban non-compete agreements. Non-compete agreements are a significant impediment to entrepreneurship, create a non-level playing field and impede the ability of employees to maximize their skills.

As of April 13, more than 400 small business owners and small business organizations have signed onto a letter urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to enact its proposed rule to ban non-compete agreements. On April 19, lead partner organizations Small Business Majority, American Sustainable Business Network, Main Street Alliance, Pacific Community Ventures, and Right to Start will submit a final letter to the FTC in response to its comment period.

On March 28, Small Business Majority's Illinois Director Tasha Brown testified before the Illinois House Financial Institutions and Licensing Committee on behalf of HB 2234, legislation that would enact critical protections for small business borrowers in Illinois.

Small Business Majority has created a comprehensive state policy agenda to ensure entrepreneurship is recognized as the lifeforce of a thriving and inclusive economy in California. The state’s 4.3 million small businesses comprise 99.8% of all businesses in the state, and they employ 7.6 million residents–nearly half of all California employees.

Illinois is home to more than 1.4 million small businesses, employing 2.4 million people and accounting for 99.6% of all businesses in the state.  They play a significant role in our state economy and workforce. However, national economic uncertainty coupled with an especially fast-changing business landscape has required small businesses to adapt, yet again. State governments must implement policies that address the new and historic burdens small businesses now face.

On February 21, Small Business Majority, LISC Atlanta, New Town Macon, the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative and Albany Community Together, Inc. submitted a letter to the Georgia House Committee on Banks and Banking in opposition to HB 84, legislation that would make Georgia small businesses vulnerable to non-transparent financing providers by failing to require all providers to disclose the annual percentage rate (APR) or estimated APR. 

Today, Small Business Majority, American Independent Business Alliance, American Sustainable Business Network, Main Street Alliance, and Pacific Community Ventures sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission underscoring the importance of keeping the deadline for the notice of proposed rulemaking aimed at ending non-compete agreements. As leading representatives of America's 32 million small businesses, we understand how detrimental non-compete agreements are to small businesses.

Small Business Majority has created a comprehensive state policy agenda to ensure entrepreneurship is at the center of a thriving and inclusive economy in New Mexico. It’s critical that state lawmakers enact short- and long-term policies to support and empower entrepreneurs by guaranteeing their access to capital, an infrastructure that can support their ability to offer quality jobs, and their ability to compete fairly now and in the future. To achieve these goals, policymakers should consider the following policy proposals. 

Today, hundreds of small business owners and business organizations added their names to a letter urging Congress to pass the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The letter outlines how small businesses stand to benefit from the legislation, namely by improving access to healthcare, increasing tax enforcement on large corporations, and making meaningful climate change investments.
