Chairman Issa's hearing theme does not reflect small business owners' opinions

Washington, D.C.  In response to Wednesday's planned Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing, Running on Empty: How the Obama Administration's Green Energy Gamble Will Impact Small Businesses and Consumers, Small Business Majority founder and CEO, John Arensmeyer released the following statement:

Small businesses understand that to survive in this tough economy they need to innovate, and that strong fuel efficiency standards will assist them in doing so by helping them save money in their own business and creating new market opportunities.

Our recent poll of more than 1,200 small business owners across the country found 87 percent of small business owners overwhelmingly support adopting strong standards now, and 80 percent support requiring the auto industry to increase mileage to 60 mpg by 2025.

Small business owners say stronger gas mileage standards will help American automakers innovate, improve efficiency and compete in the global economy; 73 percent of respondents believe the federal government should do more to make American car companies innovate.

Right now, helping small businesses grow and put Americans back to work should be our number one priority. Unfortunately, the theme of Chairman Issa's committee hearing does not accurately reflect the opinion of small businesses owners in America.

Small Business Majority is a national nonpartisan small business advocacy organization focused on solving the biggest problems facing America's 28 million small businesses. We conduct extensive opinion and economic research and work with small business owners, policy experts and elected officials nationwide to bring small business voices to the public policy table.
