Statement by John Arensmeyer, CEO, Small Business Majority:

The New Democrat Coalition's health reform principles issued yesterday directly address the No. 1 concern of small business owners across the country: the escalating cost of healthcare coverage. Our research shows that 75% of small business owners see cost as the biggest barrier to purchasing health insurance.

Small business owners on average pay 18% more for health insurance than do owners of big businesses. Historically, small businesses have led the economic recovery out of recessions. This sector also provides 79% of net new jobs in our country. For small business to flourish and continue to play these roles, health care costs and availability must be resolved.

We applaud the New Democrat Coalition's Health Care Task Force's efforts and look forward to the next steps toward healthcare reform.

Small Business Majority is a national nonprofit advocacy organization focused on solving the single biggest problem facing America's 27 million small businesses: the skyrocketing cost of healthcare. We conduct extensive opinion and economic research and make our voice heard through our nationwide network of small business spokespeople.
