Statement by John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority on President Obama̢??‰?s nomination of Maria Contreras-Sweet to head the Small Business Administration

The nomination of Maria Contreras-Sweet to lead the Small Business Administration is welcome news for small businesses and our economy. Contreras-Sweet̢??‰?s distinguished career includes being founding chairwoman of ProAm???rica Bank, a founding director of The California Endowment and cabinet secretary of the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency. Her diverse background working to expand access to capital, encourage investment and promote job creation in the government, non-profit and private sectors will be an asset in her new role as SBA administrator.

National opinion polling Small Business Majority released found a majority of small employers that need credit say getting it is a serious problem. As chairwoman of ProAm???rica Bank, Contreras-Sweet worked to help entrepreneurs access credit and financial services, empowering them to build successful small and mid-sized businesses. This, along with the other business development and managerial experience Contreras-Sweet possesses, will certainly help her as she assumes her new role.

Contreras-Sweet has shown she understands the link between small employers and our overall fiscal success, and we̢??‰?re pleased she̢??‰?ll be at the SBA̢??‰?s helm. We look forward to working with her to continue bolstering small businesses and promoting a strong economy.
