Michigan entrepreneur and advocate reflects on the workforce needs of the small business community

While Leo Carr began his career in sales at Philip Morris, he “always had the bug to own my own business.” In 1999, he started his entrepreneurial journey and bought Express Personnel Services, a franchise staffing company. Leo had the opportunity to act on his passion, which was to fill a need by helping small businesses with their workforce needs while also helping people get jobs. This has given him unique insights into how small employers can meet the moment in addressing their staffing needs.

Small Business Majority supports the establishment of a Paid Family and Medical Leave Program in Maine

On May 25, Small Business Majority's Vice President of Policy and Advocacy David Chase provided testimony before the Joint Standing Committee on Labor and Housing, in regards to LD 1964. The Act would implement recommendations to develop a Paid Family and Medical Leave Benefits Program in Maine, legislation that would allow Mainers and local small businesses to access and offer this benefit for their employees, helping them overcome obstacles in attracting and retaining a ready workforce.

Clean Slate reforms as a solution to workforce challenges

Clean Slate has many implications on the small business community, which is why it’s critical that policymakers understand their views on this issue. To support this effort, Chesapeake Beach Consulting conducted two focus group discussions with small business owners on behalf of Small Business Majority. Small business owners support banning non-compete agreements

Non-compete agreements are an obstacle to entrepreneurship, create a non-level playing field and stop employees from using their skills. They are not only a barrier to entry for entrepreneurs, but they also prevent small businesses from hiring the most diverse, qualified and skilled talent. In January, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposed a rule to ban non-compete agreements and sought input from the public.
