Legislation will help rein in the spread of high-cost, predatory small business financing products by correcting lacking transparency standards

Washington, D.C. - Small Business Majority applauds the introduction of the “Small Business Financing Disclosure Act of 2023,” which would amend the federal Truth in Lending Act (TILA) to extend the same protections for consumers to America’s small businesses.

This bill, introduced by Senator Robert Menendez and Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and cosponsored by Senators Sherrod Brown, Ben Cardin, Ron Wyden, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters, will support a high level of transparency on finance products that is necessary for small business growth.

Statement by John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority, on small business provisions in the debt limit deal

"While it is essential to support President Biden’s recommended solution to avoid the disastrous consequences of a default on the United States’ sovereign debt, it is outrageous that those who would act recklessly have threatened the stability of the American economy to extract concessions they could not obtain in the regular legislative process.

Statement by John Arensmeyer, Founder & CEO of Small Business Majority, on proposed debt limit bill and its impact on small businesses

“The U.S. House Republican-led debt limit bill that passed on Wednesday is a step backward from the investments proposed in President Biden’s budget for Fiscal Year 2024. We need policymakers to come together on a serious plan to address our nation’s debt without impacting programs and hurting the economy. We are particularly concerned by the legislation’s provision to enact spending cuts on critical federal programs, reduce funding for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and cut spending for clean energy.

Statement by Bianca Blomquist, California Policy Director & Northern California Outreach Director of Small Business Majority, praising the California Senate Budget Committee's proposal to cut taxes for small businesses

"We are thrilled that Senate Democrats have released a plan to provide meaningful tax cuts to our state's small businesses. Under the 'Protect our Progress' budget plan, small businesses that file as C corporations will reduce their taxes by 25% by lowering the current flat corporate tax rate on the first $1.5 million of taxable income. This proposal would be a boon to our state's innovators and job creators. We know that many of our smallest and most vulnerable small businesses are still struggling to overcome challenges stemming from the pandemic.
