Northern California Outreach Manager

Small Business Majority is seeking a full-time Northern California Outreach Manager to manage our on-the-ground work in Northern California. This position will help develop and implement strategies to conduct outreach and education to small business owners, business organizations, policymakers and other small business advocates on key issues impacting small business owners. The ideal candidate will have expertise in areas of outreach, public policy engagement and business community engagement and be able to work simultaneously on multiple projects. This position will report to Small Business Majority’s California Director.

NOTE: Candidates must reside in the Bay Area with easy access to Sacramento and all parts of the Bay Area.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Identify and develop strong external relationships with small business owners, business organizations, advocacy organizations, reporters and policymakers throughout Northern California and support partnership-building in the region, with a focus on supporting under-resourced entrepreneurs. 
  • Educate and conduct outreach to small employers, the self-employed and business organizations to deliver resources on topics like access to capital, healthcare and paid family leave. This includes organizing, marketing, and executing in-person presentations, webinars, and other small business engagement activities with partners. 
  • Develop strategies to successfully meet specific grant-funded deliverables.
  • Inform and activate small business owners to take action to affect state and federal policy decisions by writing letters to policymakers, submitting opinion pieces to local media, testifying at legislative hearings, press events, etc. 
  • Disseminate federal and state policy items and correspondences to regional partners and stakeholders to raise Small Business Majority’s visibility in the small business ecosystem.
  • Creatively grow the small business owner network throughout Northern California.
  • Participate in panels, press conferences, events and possibly testify at legislative hearings. 
  • Assist California Director in fundraising by identifying new funding opportunities from philanthropic foundations, corporate giving programs, etc. and maintaining relationships with current funders,  This includes keeping detailed records of outreach efforts and working with the Director to present information in reports to funders.
  • On a limited basis, work one-on-one with small business owners to learn their story, identify opportunities and direct them to resources.
  • Enter data and other contact and engagement information into Small Business Majority’s database in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Additional responsibilities may include:
  • Stay on top of critical small business news and developments. 
  • Track news coverage on key policy issues, legislation, partner organizations, etc.
  • Support team members in other regions of the state when needed.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Strong ability and proven-track record of building and maintaining strong professional relationships with a variety of external stakeholders.
  • Three years minimum of outreach or public engagement experience working within the business community. 
  • Knowledge of small business issues and California’s geographic, political and legislative landscapes.
  • Self-starter who has the ability to network with small business owners, business organizations and policymakers.
  • Ability to work in a flexible, entrepreneurial environment with frequently shifting priorities, tight deadlines, irregular hours and evolving internal processes and structures.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral. 
  • Collaborative in nature with ability to work remotely in conjunction with team members across the country.
  • Strong sense of accountability; driven not only to meet but also exceed expectations.
  • Regular regional and overnight travel required throughout the Bay Area and Northern California, about 25%.
  • Available for occasional travel throughout California and other states, including attending our semi-annual 3-day staff retreats.
  • Must be able to, and comfortable with, traveling via car and plane, as well as working from a home office.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in advocacy, public policy and/or political organizing is a plus. 
  • Successful experience fundraising from corporate and/or philanthropic institutions a plus.
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM is a plus.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean or Vietnamese a plus.

Location: Must reside in the San Francisco Bay Area  with easy access to Sacramento.
