Controller – Washington, DC

The Controller is a highly confidential position reporting to the Vice President, Operations with dotted line reporting to the CEO. SBM’s Controller works in a fast-paced environment wearing many hats and must have an organized, efficient disposition to multi-task and prioritize based on daily operational needs. The Controller must be extremely career-minded and will dedicate the energy, vigor, tenacity, education and experience to help solidify SBM’s growing accounting needs. After learning our processes, the Controller will help to build upon, create and implement new protocols, streamline systems and overall organization for the flow of accuracy and improved effectiveness. Must be able to thoroughly understand, show and document full-cycle Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

This position is located at our Washington, DC office in McPherson Square. Hybrid office/home work environment.

Objectives:

  • Maintain the organization’s accounting and related systems.
  • Coordinate with staff on budget development and grantor financial report preparation.
  • Maximize the efficiency of accounting and budget processes through innovative process development.
  • Develop quarterly financial reports illustrating the organization’s financial position.
  • Prepare and submit accurate payroll calculations to payroll service provider.
  • Track and maintain records of grant revenue earned.
  • Manage the annual audit and tax preparation process.
  • Oversee investments for maximum returns in accordance with the Investment Policy Statement.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain files and evidence to support the payables, reconciliations and journal entries that you prepare and process in accordance with company policy and GAAP.
  • Prepare and send invoices according to grant contract documents.
  • Track and follow up on aging accounts receivables.
  • Review and audit employee expense reports.
  • Track expenses to compare to approved organization budgets.
  • Maintain asset listing of furniture, equipment and depreciation.
  • Develop annual Organization Budget.
  • Prepare financial calculations, projections and cash flow analysis as requested.
  • Manage full-cycle payroll process, 403b Retirement Plan, Flexible Spending Account Plan and Voluntary Life & Disability Plan.
  • Post Vacation and Sick balances to payroll system.
  • Calculate employee/employer Health Benefits contributions.
  • Reconcile medical, dental, vision and life invoices monthly.
  • Review records for accuracy of quarterly payroll reports and W-2 distribution.
  • Maintain employer registries and reporting in all applicable states.
  • Prepare unaudited quarterly income statement and balance sheet.
  • Prepare Analytics of revenue and expense variances between reporting periods.
  • Maintain both electronic and hard copy files for all grantors contracts and proposals.
  • Prepare project budgets and compile financial reports for all Interim and Final financial reporting requirements per grant.
  • Prepare and distribute 1099s.
  • Manage annual closing of the books in accounting system.
  • Oversee the audit process and relationship with audit firm.
  • Provide financial information requested for annual tax return.
  • Review tax return and coordinate tax return filing authorizations.
  • Maintain charitable and corporate registries in all applicable states.
  • Prepare reports and filings for charitable and corporate registries.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible professional experience.
  • Prior experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Superior working knowledge of MS software and QuickBooks is essential; working with QuickBooks in a non-profit setting is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage many diverse and complex tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish priorities among multiple, competing demands and to meet deadlines.

  • BA or BS Required, Accounting Training or Certificate preferred
