The first report of our new quarterly Voice of Main Street opinion poll series assesses the challenges and opportunities that entrepreneurs in our network are facing. The inaugural report finds that 53% of small businesses are concerned about how recently announced tariffs would negatively impact their business and 77% are concerned about their impact on the U.S. economy. Additionally, a number of entrepreneurs are concerned about mass deportations negatively affecting their businesses or their suppliers’ businesses, as well as the overall U.S. economy.

As wildfires continue to spread in Los Angeles, many small businesses face significant challenges in navigating recovery. At Small Business Majority, we remain dedicated to providing resources for small business owners impacted by natural disasters. To help local Los Angeles communities, we've compiled a list of available grants, disaster loans, healthcare resources and other resources that can offer support.

Evera Ivy never planned to take over the family business. In the early 1970s, her parents moved the family from Chicago to rural Pembroke Township, Ill. to start Ivy League Farms. However, another farmer in the area once told her that “Land is the one thing that cannot be produced or reproduced.” That wisdom stuck with her and opened her eyes to the value of her family’s land and business. 

Small Business Majority and the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) have announced a new strategic alliance to support under-resourced small businesses. Through this partnership, we will collaborate on outreach events, resource development and State Small Business Credit Initiative research to uplift minority business enterprises across the nation.

Small Business Majority Files Motions to Intervene in Defense of FTC Non-Compete Ban

On January 13, Small Business Majority asked the Fifth and 11th Circuit Courts to allow it to defend the Federal Trade Commission’s rule prohibiting non-compete agreements in case the incoming Trump administration does not support the rule. Small Business Majority believes it should be allowed to continue the defense on the basis that many small businesses are disadvantaged by non-compete clauses, which make it more difficult for small firms to find and hire new talent.

CEO testifies before the U.S. Congressional Joint Economic Committee to advocate for tax reform policies

On November 19, CEO John Arensmeyer testified before the U.S. Congressional Joint Economic Committee advocating for tax reform policies that support small businesses. The expiration of provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act presents an opportunity to reform the Section 199A pass-through tax deduction and benefit Main Street small businesses.

CEO participates in Minority Business Development Agency’s 2024 Federal Procurement Summit to advance equity in procurement and contracting

On November 19, CEO John Arensmeyer moderated the “Equity in Action: Federal Agency Priorities and Lessons Learned” panel at the Minority Business Development Agency’s 2024 Federal Procurement Summit. The event brought together senior federal officials and representatives from key federal agencies who shared valuable insights with minority business enterprises in federal contracting.

New poll: Small business support a national paid family and medical leave program

On October 24, Small Business Majority and National Partnership for Women & Families released a new national opinion poll with oversamples in four states, which reveals that 79% of small business owners support the creation of a national paid family and medical leave program that would guarantee employees wage replacement for up to 12 weeks. The poll also reveals that 80% would like to offer more paid leave than they can currently afford.

New poll: Small businesses support government programs that target diverse demographics

On October 8, Small Business Majority released a new poll that explores small businesses’ experiences with targeted grant, loan and resource programs intended for diverse entrepreneurs. After the Supreme Court overturned affirmative action at colleges and universities, lawsuits against programs supporting BIPOC entrepreneurs have persisted. The poll reveals that a number of eligible small businesses have benefited from these programs and that the vast majority believe they should continue.

On September 24, Small Business Majority and the U.S. Small Business Administration Great Lakes Regional Office signed a strategic alliance memorandum to collaborate in meeting the needs of the small business community across the Great Lakes region. Together, we will work to provide resources, technical assistance, and events that help more entrepreneurs and diverse founders access capital. This mission-driven alliance aims to empower local small business owners and drive economic development in the region.

Small Business Majority network members participate in the White House’s Southeast Regional Small Business Summit

On September 10, Small Business Majority network members and advocates participated in the White House’s Southeast Regional Business Briefing. The business owners heard from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Deputy Administrator Dilawar Syed, alongside other SBA officials, to learn more about the state of small business and available SBA resources. The entrepreneurs also visited Capitol Hill where they spoke with policymakers to advocate for small business policies.

New poll: Small businesses support bottom-up tax reforms

On August 28, Small Business Majority released a new poll, which reveals that 82% of small business owners believe the federal tax system favors large corporations over small businesses. The poll also reveals that small businesses support reforms that would level the playing with corporations and wealthy individuals.

New research report: Small businesses are undergoing a digital transformation

On August 22, Small Business Majority released a new multifaceted study that examines how small businesses adopted new digital technologies during and after the pandemic. While many small businesses have adopted new tools to support their growth, the report also reveals that challenges remain, especially for businesses with less revenue.
